Get Fit and Save: Municipal Gym Discounts for Generating Green Energy
Overview
The municipality of Quart de Poblet actively participated in the LOCAL4GREEN project (Interreg MED 2014-20). Inspired by the project’s green taxation approach, Quart de Poblet has introduced an innovative fiscal policy linking gym membership discounts to energy generation. The municipality’s gym, the first in Spain to generate electricity through exercise equipment, offers reduced membership fees to users who contribute to energy production. This approach promotes fitness and sustainability, integrating energy generation with fitness activities. The policy supports environmental goals and provides economic benefits to residents, demonstrating a practical way to combine public health and green energy initiatives.
Evidence of success
Approximately 1,200 people have been involved in the initiative in Quart de Poblet. They actively contribute to electricity generation by using exercise equipment that powers the gym.

Several municipalities run gyms in Europe and after a feasible investment in the exercise equipment that fees model can be easily replicated.
