Energy Upgrade & Automation of Public Lighting Systems in the Municipality of Papagou – Holargos
GREECE, MUNICIPALITY OF PAPAGOU – HOLARGOS
Greece, Street lighting, LED retrofitting, Lighting control, Remote management, IoT integration, Public-Private Partnerships
Overview
The Papagou-Holargos municipality launched a public lighting upgrade to replace outdated, high-energy-consuming streetlights with modern, energy-efficient LED technology. The upgrade replaced traditional luminaires ranging from 23W to 400W with LEDs rated at 23W, 36W, 54W, and 65W. A key innovation was the integration of a remote monitoring and management system. This system allows real-time control at the pillar level and, where sensors are present, at individual luminaires—enabling dynamic dimming, reduced energy use, and improved public safety. A computerized maintenance system was also implemented to streamline repairs and monitor performance. As part of a Smart City pilot, the system integrates multiple subsystems, including energy management, smart parking, public Wi-Fi management, and preventive maintenance, supporting the municipality’s goals for sustainability, efficiency, and modern urban infrastructure.RESULTS
