Smart Lighting and Integrated Urban Management in Palmela Municipality

PORTUGAL, MUNICIPALITY OF PALMELA

Portugal, Street lighting, Remote management, IoT integration, ESCO

Overview

The Municipality of Palmela enhances its overall energy efficiency by adopting a lighting management platform, looking to introduce "Smart City" technologies to manage public spaces. Prior to the upgrade, high energy consumption was a major municipal concern, reflecting in high costs, both in the energy bill and in the environment. The main opportunity identified is related to the installation of one communication and management system, able to optimize the functioning of multiple systems installed on the city. At same time this allows the increase of the lighting system efficiency, reducing its costs. The management and monitoring platform communicates with the luminaires via a network and can collect information from various sensors and actuators. Taking advantage of this infrastructure, two pilots were included in the project, one focused on monitor and sensor recyclable paper and cardboard waste bins, and the other to manage garden irrigation.
