Smart Transformation of Rivergaro’s Public Lighting Network

ITALY, RIVERGARO MUNICIPALITY

Italy, Street lighting, LED retrofitting, Lighting control, Remote management, Public funding

Overview

This project involved the comprehensive requalification of Rivergaro’s public lighting system, aiming to reduce light pollution, enhance visual comfort, and prepare the city for smart technologies. The existing network of 1,682 lighting points was largely outdated— 71% were obsolete and only 2% used LEDs, with most non-compliant with current regulations. The project introduced energy-efficient LED lighting with low color temperatures (3,000K–4,000K) that improved both functional and aesthetic aspects of public spaces. Innovations included point-to-point dimming, dual-mode electronic ballasts, and a GPRS-based remote-control system for centralized monitoring and adaptive light management. Lessons learned emphasize that the area was representative of broader issues, unsatisfactory light quality and outdated infrastructure. A service-based financing model helped overcome cost barriers, leading to reduced energy and maintenance expenses and high-quality lighting. Recommendations include using luminaires compatible with smart technologies, implementing point-to-point supervision, and avoiding delays and financing challenges through proper planning and model selection.
