Overview
The Municipality of Nea Filadelfeia – Nea Chalkidona implemented a smart lighting project in a public park aimed at enhancing safety, increasing activity, and improving energy efficiency. The intervention included the replacement of outdated and light-polluting luminaires (such as sphere-type and “lantern” architectural lights) with LED, avoiding excessive upward light emissions that disturbed local wildlife. A key innovation of the project was the integration of an IoT-based Lighting Management System, enabling real-time control and monitoring of the park’s lighting infrastructure. The new LED fixtures are equipped with smart Zhaga interfaces and wireless controllers communicating over a mobile network. The IoT system provides adaptive lighting control (dimming and time-based scheduling), fault detection and notifications, energy consumption logging and reporting, and geolocation of fixtures on a digital map. These features allow the municipality’s Technical Service to remotely manage the network, optimize energy use, and respond quickly to maintenance needs. As a result, the project significantly reduced energy consumption while improving lighting quality, visitor experience, and environmental performance in the park.RESULTS
The park serves as a recreational and activity space even after sunset. The installation of new LED fixtures and the control system contributed to:
- The Immediate reduction of the Municipality’s costs - savings in energy consumption: 100 kWh/y
- Reduced maintenance costs for the fixtures, as the control system reports faults
- Improved lighting quality
- Increased safety perception for residents and visitors of the city
